Our inspiration for Life in Our Time comes from our own experiences at university. Despite submitting numerous assignments, the only recognition we received was reflected in our grades and the hope of achieving a good degree. And we think this is the issue: in a society that values knowledge, our university degrees are valuable only to the extent that they can be translated into jobs.
That wasn’t enough for us. We wanted to leverage the knowledge we gained at university to do more. We wanted to share what we learned and, most importantly, hear from others to further broaden our perspectives.
However, we recognised that traditional academic platforms were not particularly student-friendly, functioning mainly as spaces for reading the great philosophers (and even then our own university library could not afford some of the articles). So, we decided that our university degrees should be worth more than just a brief mention on our CVs or merely a fulfilled qualification to help us secure a job.
We decided that university students, regardless of their backgrounds, deserve a platform to share their visions and ideas on current issues while offering potential solutions drawn from their unique experiences. We decided that scholarly debates shouldn’t end when class discussions do, and most importantly, we decided that we are academic scholars.
And who knows? Perhaps our platform will inspire revolutionary thoughts that will resonate with open minds somewhere out there.
